Seems www.fileplanet.com from here in the midwest doesn't work that well. I keep getting error 500 on the website about more than half the time. I also try to avoid it by using ftp but even that is reject guest/anon login. PLEASE HELP!

Its probably a 'busy' signal.
A halflife/Counterstrike patch was released recently, and Counterstrike has a few hundred thousand players, so its packed with patch downloaders
