I can't get the update to unzip.... any suggestions?

tried it... it says that my unzipping utility doesn't recognize the file type... maybe I'll try Winzip instead

Yeah try winzip. If that fails, redownload the update.
It could be corruptted

 And make sure...

When you use Winzip, use extract, then find the place for it. Don't select all the things and drag them over (it took me awhile on something to find that out).
