Chapter One: The Meeting

The room was dark, Krython noted. This was not a serious deficiancy, as it was only one stop among many in this long underground journey. The way was lit, though poorly, by occasional flickering torches. Krython momentarily wondered who maintained this massive underground labryinth, then decided that he would rather not know, and concentrated on getting to the meeting on time. The master was rumored to have no mercy on any who were late.

As he entered into the chamber, he felt the eyes that glanced torwards him. This night would be one of import, he guessed. As he proceeded to his place of honor near the head of the table, he mentally inventoried the number of warlords gathered here. As he settled into the chair of steel, he started as he realized that all were here, save only for one. The One.

The rasping scrape of metal on stone to his left caused him to notice the extra chair being brought to the table by the page. What guest would possibly be coming to a meeting such as this. A deep chill settled into his bones as his instict guessed the answer. His mind, desperate for an alternative, directed his green eyes torward the others. A glance at Spoine, across from him, confirmed his fears. Spione, who he had never seen show fear at confronting anyone, and indeed seemed to relish contradicting his superiors, was rigid upon his hard seat, staring uneasily at the plain surface of the table.

There was no fanfare of trumpets to announce his arrival. The door was silently opened to admit the two dark shapes from the hallways. After they had entered, the many guards left the conference room to take up positions in the maze of dark hallways, with instructions to kill any that might wander into these caverns. A hush fell over the group as the newcomers walked to the ends of the long table. The muscular man dressed in black ringmail walked to the foot of the table, after placing his ******* sword in the wall rack provided for this purpose. The other one, shrouded in a dark robe which orgins were unknown, but probably not of this earth, took his place at the head.

The beginning of the meeting went as usual, with the customary reports of progress made and funds gained. Krython felt a momentary spark of pleasure at realizing his domain was the leader in blackmail and graft. Spione, the commander of the region next to his, also had an impressive accomplishment to present, for he had nearly doubled the numbers of his legion. However, after these statements, the dark cloud of fear once again settled around the warlords gathered here. After this ominous pause, the warrior in black, who they knew only as the Death Merchant, rose and made an announcement. "Prepare your men and your equipment, for coming soon is a battle of which none of you have seen the likes of in your lifetime. We will take over this land, from the northern wastes to the southern plains of Keldrin. The date of the overthrow of all rulers and forms of government is a fortnight from now. You may leave."

This announcement shocked everyone into silence, save only for Spoine, who sprang to his feet and uttered a cry of disbelief. "You cannot do this!", he exclaimed. "Why not?" was the coldly spoken reply from the hooded figure at the end of the table. Krython shifted his surprised gaze to the shrouded man about whom he had entirely forgotten. He remained silent, and raised one gnarled finger to point at Spoine. A slight crackle was heard as Spoine was slammed violently into the wall. Though his impact was sufficiently forceful to leave a mark in the stone wall, Spoine remained alive sufficiently long enough to feel the pain of his body rotting off him within the space of a few minutes. After this gruesome scene, no more objections were heard, and Krython's chief concern was not to appear too hurried to forsake the room.

Chaper Two

The day was too cloudy for the tastes of Tanarin, the govenor of the bustling city of Keldrin. Nevertheless, he had decided not to change his schedule, and tour the entire city today as planned. Several lords, bodyguards, and hangers-on composed his entourage. Tanarin was feeling rather pleased at his excellent reception. All had gone well today. That was about to change.

The mayor was now in the final residential district, and was busy shaking hands and kissing babies. As his group rounded the stone corner, they were confronted by a mixed group of swordsmen and bowmen. Chaos broke out as arrows sang through the air, and the swords of the guardsmen crossed with those of the attackers. Children and adults ran from the scene, as did the mayor and some of the politicians, who had not survived to a ripe old age through a policy of bravery. As Tanarin tried desperately to retrace his route through the city, he came face to face with another group of attackers armed with bludgeoning weapons, smiting down resisters like so many sheep. The last thing he recalled seeing was the rough grain of the thick club that slammed into his face. Then the darkness spread over him.

Chapter 3

As Tanarin sanded down the rough wood, a faint smile traced its way across his face. This bow would be a good one; he had no doubt that his customer would be well pleased. Perhaps he would make a few extra coins for the fine craftmanship that this well-shaped longbow represented. Those coins would find their way to the bowmakers small bank account, where they would join the others accrued during his years of work. Perhaps someday Tanarin would have sufficient funds to retire to a small mountainside cottage and pursue his hobby of hunting the elusive Krag sheep. So intent was he on his work, that the tumult outside his shop was paid no more attention than if it had been in another world.

******************************
************

Krython noted with pleasure the progress of the battle. Though some pockets of resistance still held out in parts of Keldrin City, they were fast crumbling under the massive onslaught. Brave and beleagured, the warriors were fighting and dying underneath the flaming sun. The leaderless defenders were either dying off, going into hiding, or fleeing the city by now, thought Krython. He was looking forward to interrogating the unconsious mayor when he woke. The mayor would undoubtably give him the information that he needed.

"Where...where am I?" groaned the mayor as he slowly awoke in a strange room. A harsh voice responded, "Nowhere of importance. We have some information we need from you. Where is the Stone of Keldrin?" The small, stooped mayor noticed for the first time that he was bound upon a frame of iron, and a pang of fear shot up his spine. "I, I don't know what you're speaking of!", he exclaimed. Krython leaned forward in anticipation, watching the black-hooded torturer go to work.

NPC VIEW

Balkor, a young warrior gathered his militia of men to stop the attack on keldrin, although armed with the poorest of weapons they were determined to save their great city even if it meant their deaths. Balkor ran to the smiths shop, asking for weapons and armor, he noticed Tanarin and took the bow.
i hope Tanarin doesn't mind me borrowing this

NPC: Melken, small boy

OOC: you're doing such a great job, DM! If this doesn't fit....tell me, and I'll take it out.

Melken was a small, golden-haired boy, with inquisitive blue eyes. Those eyes, his mother always said, would get him into trouble one day. Today, they were fastened on the squirrel that Melken had followed into the alley behind Tanarin's shop. Melken liked to hang around this alley. It was usually quiet and cool, and he liked the sounds of Tanarin sanding wood. Melken also liked to peer in the window when he could and watch the master craft the bows and arrows. Someday, he thought fervently, someday, I'm going to go in there and buy one of those bows. Then I'm going to be one of the greatest archers, just like my dad!

From a distant part of the city, he could hear faint sounds of fighting. Running feet, the clang of swordplay! Anticipation and rampant curiousity running though his small frame, he rushed excitedly out of the alley towards the sounds. Slipping in and out of shadows, the small boy ran, unheeded, towards the chaos, sure that he would find something worth investigating!

Rounding the cobblestone corner, he almost bounced off a large man holding a huge wood club. Stumbling back, Melken slipped sideways, and landed against the rough wall of a house. As he did, he happened to look up and catch a glimpse of a familiar face. The funny man who always pats me on the head when there are lots of folks around...the...the... Melken scrunched his face up trying to think. ...the Mayor! Just as enlightenment hit, so did the man with the large club!

Bam! The frightened face of the Mayor was quickly extinguished into blank unconciousness. Melken scuttled backwards on all fours, back around the corner, and peered out from his hiding place. That was a bad man!

The man with the large club hauled the limp form of the
mayor up over his shoulder and with a swarm of fighting still going on, plowed through the crowd with forceful strides. Where are they going? Melken wondered. I wonder if this is the day I'm going to get into trouble? he thought vaguely as he stood up and started to follow. He could still see the man with the mayor on his shoulder surging through the melee. Intent on his "prey", Melken slipped through the crowd on the edges, unnoticed and unharmed.

OOC: this might be a good thread for Matthew Foxhead to join in.

Matthew Foxhead's view

Whoa! This is not good! Crouched on the roof of a house in keldrin's residential district, Matthew surveyed the scene with wide eyes. Keldrin was under attack by some kind of strange army, and defenders were dropping like ogrflies. Probably shouldn't get involved... A razor-fast arrow flew past Matthew's head. Never mind... After locating the person who shot the arrow at him, Matthew quickly got up and slid down the roof. The warrior was loading up another arrow, but Matthew was already up and running. Still a good 15 feet away from the warrior, Matthew wasn't close enough to use his katana. Instead, he unsheathed his silver dagger, and sent it spinning towards the bowsman.

At the exact same time the bowman launched an arrow, the dagger hit...

...the bow.

Slicing clean through the curved wood, the bow snapped under the tremendous force of the archers arm, causing it to not only shatter, but the top half of the bow collided with the bowman's head, effectively knocking him out.

There was barely enough time to retrive his dagger before an avenging swordsman had ran up behind Matthew.

Wonderful.

With a dagger in his left hand, and his katana in his right, Matthew spun around to engage the swordsman.

The warrior was wielding an enormus Battle Axe, swinging it at Matthew. When the axe hit the ground barely inches away from Matthew, it dislodged a large stone, a piece of the stone walkway.

The mighty warrior saw the knife-throwing one take down the archer and decided to fix the pesky man for good. He might have done it, too, if he had been as smart as he was strong. However, he had not expected the little man to move so fast. His powerful overhead axe swing missed the spinning swordsman by mere inches, putting a huge gash in the cobblestones. However, getting it out was a problem...He jerked, and the axe refused to budge from the stone. He saw the eyes of the swordsman harden as the katana came to life.

OOC: Both of them fit perfectly!

Back to Matt

Matthew narrowed his eyes, and pasted on his best grin. The warrior had lodged his axe firmly into the ground, and it didn't look like it was going to be moving any time soon.

Barely three feet away, Matthew took a second to grin at the warrior...

Probably the last thing you'll be seeing for a while...

Matthew then took a running jump, with his left arm outstretched. He twirled his katana around a few times, noticing a decent number of cuts appearing on the warrior's bare arms, and a few nicks and dents in his bronze breastplate. His feet connected with the warrior's face, while his dagger connected with the top of the battle axe's pole. Matthew was planning to use his momentum to swing around the pole for another face kick, but the warrior kicked the battle axe at that same moment. It came out of the ground, and Matthew went flying. His dagger flew into the side of a nearby building, two inches of the tip sticking into the wall.

While still on the ground, the warrior charged. All that remained of his axe was the long metal pole, apparently he had broken off the twin blades in order to use the remaining part like a spear.

Matthew rolled, then jumped up onto his feet, crouched, with katana at the ready.

The warrior twirled the pole once, then crouched as well.

(OOC: This is gonna be good )

what am I going to do! what am I going to do!
Cypher thought as he clutched his battle staff,
if i charge, they will hit me with a volley of arrows, if i stay here they will burn my house!
"even though i'm pinned i must make a move"
Cypher looked at the dead warrior and noticed a glimmer, he reached down and noticed some coins, "how about that! its my lucky day!" Cypher said as he got ready to charge the archers on the hillside. "I wish i could get a little help here but because i'm alone it means more coins for me!"

NPC view

"Men set up on the hillside! ready your slings or bows!," said Balkor gleaming with pride, " we'll show them who is more powerful!" as they ran up the hill, Balkor leading them, at least ten archers with crossbows were looking right down at them.
oh no "DUCK!"
they jumped to the ground as a volley of arrows struck, many men were wounded and a few dead. Balkor shout to his militia, "unsheath your daggers and swords! attack on my command!" said Balkor, no longer gleaming with pride but frightend and scared, "ATTACK!" the militia ran at the archers, Balkor, and a few other men were the only ones who had armor, when they charged a volley of arrows hit the men but the arrows bounced off the few others. Balkors main strength of his militia was defeated. He noticed right before he made his first swing an old man tumbling down a hill, "thank god, Cypher."

Cypher's View
Cypher was astonished when he stood up from rolling down a hill. He saw Balkor.
what is that little ******* doing now! Cypher thought as he an towards the backs of the archers.

NPC (for now): Melken Arrowroot's View

Sounds of fighting were still going on around him as Melken followed the bad man. The mayor looked funny bobbing up and down on the bad man’s shoulder, arms swaying, limply. Every once in a while, the mayor’s head connected with the brawny man’s shoulder and bounced off sharply. Melken felt a giggle tickling his throat.

A sudden commotion across the square caught his attention. A black-robed youth jumped down off a roof and started throwing daggers! Melken’s eyes widened in excitement as he realized the dagger-thrower was about to be hit by a huge man wielding a battle axe. Melken bit his lip. Stay and watch or follow the bad man? CLANG! Oooh, the axe hit the cobblestones and stuck! The bad man turned the corner to the right, towards the bank. Fwwwwwt! Melken’s head followed the sound. There went another dagger! It’s stuck in the wall! He looked back to where the bad man was: the limp hand of the mayor bounced out of sight. “Uh!” exclaimed Melken, torn. The black robed youth had a long sword drawn.

He wanted to stay and watch, needed to stay and watch! How was it going to turn out? But something pushed him into following the stolen mayor. Some part of the stories about his father had taken hold of him and he felt he had to “protect” Keldrin. Even if it was the silly mayor-man. The chance to play the hero, just like his father, was just too strong. It overcame his innate curiosity. Melken ran off in the direction of the bank, with a quick backward glance at the engaging battle behind him. ’Sides, Melken grinned, Looks like the dagger-thrower is gonna win.

OOC: Ok, OK, Matt. :-)

The hulking warrior realized that he had lost a blade from his axe, and smashed the other one off to make a rough spear. With blood pouring from the gashes in his armor, he screamed a battle cry and hurled himself at the crouching swordsman.

Back 2 Matt

The warrior charged.

They don't train warriors like they used to, I guess...

Matthew sidestepped the charging warrior, double-kicking him in the shins, which caused him to trip.

Then, Matthew stepped on the fallen warrior's hand (which was holding the axe-pole) and tried to scoop up the pole...

...but it was way to heavy, so he kicked it aside, and brought the katana down to the back of the warrior's neck, which was barely an inch away from the hairs on the back of his neck.

"Do... not... move..." said Matthew.

But then...

Ouch...that hurt.

Once again, speed triumphed over strength as the hefty warrior slammed into the ground. He felt the swordsman move above him, and heard the warning not to move...

and lunged to the left, clawing upward with his right hand for the sword that must be pointed at some rather useful body part.

"BALKOR DUCK!" Cypher shouted as he engaged in close combat with the enemy archers, Cypher took one giant swing and knocked several archers down with his long, metal battlestaff. An arrow wizzed by Cypher's ear, knicking the very tip of it as he turned to see another regiment of archers standing behind him.
oh great Cypher prayed to the three as he charged the new group sending off icespikes. The only problem was the spikes were bouncing off the archers, Cypher realized this and ran down the hill grabing Balkor and the only other survivor of the militia
this is very bad!

Melken Arrowroot's view

Oof! I gotta hurry, the bad man is getting away! Melken tried to run faster. Down through a dark alley, the cobblestones were slimy and damp. An occasional rat scuttled past. The walls in the alley were high and none of the structures had windows that opened onto it. Melken splashed through another puddle and then quickly flattened himself against the wall, worried when the bad man ahead paused. Please don’t see me, please don’t see me, please don’t see me… he intoned through soundless lips. His heart started to race. He suddenly realized he was alone in a dark alley in Keldrin and with a big, bad, man who had already knocked out the mayor and nobody knew he was there. Nobody told me hero stuff was scary! he wailed in his head. He set his lip and ducked lower to the ground. I’m NOT scared. I’m NOT scared…I’m not… He froze in astonishment. Huh? Where’s the bad man?

Cypher, running down the hill quickly runs into a house in keldrin. He shouts at balkor, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIANCE FROM BATTLE TO LEAD MEN! ALL OF THE MEN THAT WERE WITH YOU ARE DEAD EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE, HE SHOULD THANK THE THREE HE IS STILL ALIVE!"
Balkor couldn't speak
"AND WHERE DID YOU GET THIS BOW! YOU COULDN'T AFFORD SOMETHING LIKE THIS!" Cypher said and continues shouting at Balkor as he healed the wounded man. "AND ANOTHER THING! WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER! SHE IS PROBABLY WORRIED SICK! YOU ARE STILL NOTHING BUT A MERE CHILD TO ME! NOW GET OUT OF MY SITE, YOU DISGUST ME!"
As Balkor left Cypher gave the wounded man a potion.
i guess i'll have to take care of those archers the hard way thought Cypher as he quickly walked out the door and headed towards his hut.

Melken Arrowroot's View

Where’d he go??!? Melken stood there open-mouthed. His blue eyes grew big and round. He looked around but couldn’t see any kind of opening. He…he…just…disappeared! He gasped. “Dark magic!” he whispered fretfully through shaking lips. He made the sign of Phen and spat on the ground three times for good luck and protection. The alley seemed to suddenly get very small around him. The air seemed still and warm. Melken could feel little droplets of sweat slip down the back of his shirt. There were no sounds of life around him anywhere. No clouds. No birds. No wind. Just the hammering of his very loud heart trying to burst through the front of his shirt. Maybe I better go… Melken started to back out, very quietly, looking all around, fearfully as he did. The sound of his feet treading across the cobblestones seemed to echo in the dead air. The silence was pushing in on him, just like the high walls of the alley and Melken just wanted to get out, quietly and quickly.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE FROM BATTLE TO LEAD MEN! ALL OF THE MEN THAT WERE WITH YOU ARE DEAD EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE, HE SHOULD THANK THE THREE HE IS STILL ALIVE!"
"AND WHERE DID YOU GET THIS BOW! YOU COULDN'T AFFORD SOMETHING LIKE THIS!" "AND ANOTHER THING! WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER! SHE IS PROBABLY WORRIED SICK! YOU ARE STILL NOTHING BUT A MERE CHILD TO ME! NOW GET OUT OF MY SITE, YOU DISGUST ME!"

Melken jumped clean out of his skin, flew up in the air at least a hundred feet above the alley and fell back down, right back into his clothes! At least it felt that way. He had no idea what all the shouting was that he heard from behind the alley. He never understood a single word he heard. All he knew was that the deadly-quiet, little alley-world exploded.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Melken screamed, startled. He jumped up, then fell down, splashing into a mud puddle, pulled himself up on one knee, slipped on the slimy pathway, slammed back into the stone wall, which partly gave way, and hurled, head-first, down a long, cold, dark tunnel. “AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhh………………..” The stone wall slid back into place behind him, cutting off what little light there was. He was sliding, spinning, rushing, down a long ramp. The air smelled bad. It was cold. It was wet. It was dark. The ramp hurt. His throat hurt. His knee was wet. His head was upside down. He was going too fast….WHAM!

Before the eyes of Cypher, the door of the hut was crumpled by an invisible force. Splinters of wood flew like matchsticks as a thick mist began to spread through the town. A black shadow began to exit the hut, the mist concealing all details save for the glint of the fading sunlight off a large, evil-looking weapon. A small boy who appeared to be leaping into the area so strangely affected was stopped mid-air, and hurled against the stone wall of the massive building across the street as if he was a rag doll. The dark figure began to advance...

Melken Arrowroot's view

"UUuuunh!" Melken moaned, lifting his head slightly. "Mommy, tell the world to be quiet...." CLUNK.

The world, blissfully went quiet as Melken, temporarily, passed out again. When he came to again, his head throbbed, and he blinked his eyes a few time...it's so dark! He rubbed his hands across his eyes. He could feel pieces of splintered wood lying around him, one long shard across his stomach. He tried to sit up and winced as he realized he was being poked through the back of his britches. Reaching back, he pulled out the shingle that he landed on. He rubbed his backside a few times and tried to see where he was. His sleeve got caught on a pile of rubble and the ripping sound as it tore, seemed very loud. Oh no, Mom's gonna kill me! he thought, looking down at the long rent in his favorite shirt...well, my only shirt...WHAT WAS THAT? His head whipped around. There was a loud SNAP nearby and if he strained real hard, he could see something that looked like a shadowy person, standing in the dark.

Bad man, bad man, bad man! Gotta get out. Gotta get out.... Melken looked around wildly, but still could not see. He started scrambling on all fours, back away from where the shadow-person stood. The bad-man-shadow-person moved towards him...

Melkin saw the frayed edge of a dark colored robe underneath the swirling mist. The dark form moved past the boy. Perhaps another day the shape would have tormented the child, but not today. Today was for greater deeds. Slowly, the cloud began to change it's form...
