Update System....

I havn't heard much about this so I guess I'll start a thread about it. The update system for RPG is just dumb =/. I think that its one of the main reason people give up on the mod. They can't figure it out, and I can understand why, its a lot more confusing then it could be. I am usually in #tribesrpg and people come by all the time asking about missing file errors. Sometimes it takes me a long time before I can help them install the updates and a lot of the time they give up.

I think a new update system should be used in T2RPG. Maybe something like a little VB update app that would connect to a central server, check which version you have, and download the correct update. Spending the time to make something like this would really help the mod IMO. Just a thought....

I'm sure JI would do this if he could get a few RELIABLE mirrors for the files, however so far, I think thats been a bit of a problem.

Well...

For TRPG, there is no need for an auto updater since 5.0 final will be the last one, and if a server runs somehting older, than the server should be hosting that version of the mod (meaning the entire mod version, not just the update).

As for T2RPG, it all depends on how the installer is compiled. I would use Wise Installer Professional (which i may use to complie TRPG 5.0 Final) and add a small string to the users registry to ask the user every 5 days or so if he wants to check for updates on computer startup, simply him clicking "Ok" which would send him to the T2RPG site where he could see if there is an update, or by him clicking "No" which would just close the window.

If T2RPG was it's own game, meaning not just a mod, then adding an autoupdater would be simpler.

I don't understand why it would be harder to make one for a mod... Its not like the auto-updater needs to check for updates every time you want to play. Its just a simple app that first checks to see what version you have by looking in your tribes2\rpg folder or whatever, then connects to a central server (like the one JI used for the trancephyte stuff) and downloads the update

...and when you try to connect to a server, the message will bring up the error, plus a "try running autoupdate.exe" or something like that.
